UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, who has returned to Cyprus following her reappointment, will be received on Saturday at 1030(local time) by President Nikos Christodoulides.
Holguin will remain on the island until May 31. On Monday, May 26, also at 1030, she will meet with the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in the north.
According to the UN, Holguin will also meet with representatives of the leaders and other stakeholders involved in the Cyprus issue.
As the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned, during her stay on the island, Holguin is also expected to meet with the bi-communal Technical Committee on Youth at the Ledra Palace.
After her meetings with the leaders, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy intends to make statements to the media and, according to sources, she will outline her schedule and the next steps.
It has not yet been clarified whether she will meet with the two leaders a second time during her visit. It is believed that this will depend on the overall outcome of her meetings.
Following her visit to Cyprus, Holguin will visit the three guarantor powers, namely Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
UN Secretary General announced that an informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format will be held at the end of July, following a similar meeting in Geneva, on March 17-18. The two sides agreed to proceed with a number of initiatives, involving the opening of crossing points, the creation of a Technical Committee on Youth and other initiatives in the buffer zone and throughout the island.
Holguin completed a previous assignment as Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on Cyprus from January to July 2024.
The European Commission designated Johannes Hahn, a former European Commissioner, as Special Envoy for Cyprus to contribute to the settlement process, in close cooperation with Holguín.
