Police on Thursday announced increased security measures over the Kataklysmos (flood festival) weekend running from Saturday to Monday night.

“The measures taken include an increased presence of police, particularly officials from the traffic department on motorways, intercity roads and especially on the main roads,” the police said.

They added that “particular emphasis” would be placed on traffic offences that have been proven to contribute to fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Due to an expected increase in traffic, police appealed to drivers to be careful and compliant with traffic laws and signs, as well as the instructions of the police on duty.

Alongside road safety measures, police are taking additional measures to prevent crime, which include increased patrols and checks in urban and rural areas.

Homeowners are also advised to protect their property before heading out.
